The value of having parents cannot be over-emphasized. It is a well-known fact that children are meant to be nurtured by responsible parents. Almost every adult has been groomed and nurtured by either two or one parent. From infancy to adulthood, children enjoyed many things from their parents, like safety and security, care, love and affection and much more. In this article I want to look at the things parents have always done for their children and family in general, which make such parents “Safety Champions”.
Parents protect their children from every form of harm to their health and safety. For example, hunger is a major killer in developing countries of Africa and Asia. This is due to such countries being very poor and also due to political instabilities that have resulted in wars. According to Action against Hunger organization, “14M Children Suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition currently, 45% Of Child Deaths Worldwide Are Due to Hunger & Related Causes and 700 Children Die Each Day from Illnesses Caused by Dirty Water and Unhygienic Living Conditions”. So if you ask me whether parents are safety champions or can they be safety champions? I will say yes. This is because they protected and are still protecting their children against hunger. They did and have been doing everything possible to provide hygienic food for their children. This prevented the children from being killed by hunger.
Parents also protected their children from mean kids around them, such as bullies. Bullying is a very dangerous thing that causes trauma to the victims. Bullying is said to occur when an individual (or a group of people) repeatedly and intentionally cause harm to another person (or group of people), who is unable to avoid being targeted. According to Telethon Kids, Bullying can include: Physical bullying (hitting, tripping, damaging property). Verbal bullying (insults, teasing and intimidation). There is hardly any adult who did not experience bullying at a point. Children experience bullying at school and in their neighborhoods from time to time. But one thing that is known, is that no responsible parents become aware of their child being bullied who will keep silent and not protect their child. To protect children from bullying, parents have had to help their children create a list of responses. For example, parents practice phrases that can help a child to tell someone to stop the bullying behavior. Phrases such as “Leave me alone”, “Back off.” These and many other strategies have helped children to succeed and keep safe around bullies. Again parents are “Safety Champions” in the area of protecting their children against mean kids (bullies).
Parents are home safety champions too. They make sure that the home environment is safe for the family. This is because of their recognition of the hazards that abound in every corner of the home. For example, there are sharp objects, fire, chemicals, electricity, water, gas, darkness, etc. These are examples of hazards in the home that can cause harm or kill a family member. I remember a report about how a little boy was killed by a bookshelf that fell on him in their apartment many years ago. On one occasion, a child was found dead in a pool of water close to the house. In recent times in Nigeria, there have been deaths reported of children in their privately owned swimming pools. These are accidents that parents have worked hard and still working hard to prevent for their families. So what do you think? Are parents safety champions? The answer is yes.
